The 4-course certificate is unique in providing a strong foundation in both toxicology and industrial hygiene:
- Toxicology /strong> the study of the adverse affects of chemicals foreign to the biological system. Evolving from the practices of ancient poisoners, modern toxicology encompasses the study of molecular biology, using toxicants as tools. It is an ever-expanding field, assimilating knowledge and techniques from branches of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.

Industrial Hygiene /strong> the science and art devoted to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of those environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace that may cause sickness, impaired health and well-being or significant discomfort among workers or among citizens of the community.
This program was developed to help students at the post-baccalaureate level in industrial or governmental settings learn more about the basic principles of toxicology and industrial hygiene. The knowledge gained can be applied "on-the-job" to enhance the student's performance in the areas of safety and health.
Students completing all four courses will be awarded a certificate indicating their completion of this program of study. Alternatively, should a student completing the certificate choose, these courses can be used as a basis for more advanced study at the master or doctoral level in these areas.
